Shanghai
Maritime Court Auctioned A Foreign Ship
Online
The ship was sold to a Hong Kong bidder for RMB 16.89 million yuan
Shanghai Maritime Court said January 16 that they had successfully sold a Panamanian ship “MAHONI”
for RMB 16.89 million yuan at Taobao
auction platform on January 6. On the afternoon of January 13, the ship was
released and delivered to the Hong Kong buyer.
According to Shanghai Maritime Court, “MAHONI” is the
first ship sold through an online auction by Shanghai Maritime Court in the year of
2017 and also the first foreign ship sold through an online auction in China.
“MAHONI”, a Panamanian bulk ship of 16,498 gross tonnages,
is owned by PT Meranti Maritime of Indonesia who is subjected to the
judgment enforcement. On May 2016, 31 Filipino crew members of “MAHONI” made a
pretrial property preservation application to Shanghai Maritime Court for arresting the
ship which was berthed in Shanghai,
as the owner defaulted their wages for 18 months. After the court judgment
became effective, PT Meranti Maritime refused to
perform their obligation of payment. The 31 Filipino crew members then applied
to the court for auctioning “MAHONI”.
